Ben Couch spent more than 20 years as National Director of Training at Watermark Retirement Communities, where he built the training curriculum for over 100 roles across 80 communities — reaching 6,000 employees in 23 states. Few people have shaped frontline senior-care training at that scale.
Today he is the founder of elumenEd, bringing dementia and Alzheimer's caregiver education and his Eastern Ergonomics safe-transfer training to healthcare facilities and families nationwide. Eastern Ergonomics is his own creation: it channels 40+ years of martial arts — Ben holds a 7th-degree black belt in karate and black belts across eight disciplines — into teaching caregivers to move and transfer residents using balance and body mechanics instead of brute strength, cutting the injuries that drive turnover and workers' comp costs.
In 2022, his mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis sharpened his focus on dementia-specific education. He now writes The Dementia Newsletter — more than 100 weekly editions covering dementia science, caregiver mental health, and practical technique — turning hard-won expertise into something caregivers can use the same day.
